I’ve been using Twitter for the past month or so as a social networking tool, and now have close to 800 followers. I’m still not sure how some of these people found me, but I’m glad they did.
I follow them too, and I have been learning a lot…about them, and about Twitter. It’s still unclear to me how I can engage in a real conversation with that many people, but I’m willing to try to find out.
My theory is that Twitter is like a virtual office watercooler for people who work at home. At least it is for me.
While I was getting Twitter set up, I found a really helpful post, How To Become A Twitter Rockstar – Sort Of, that offers great common-sense advice about the best ways to use Twitter, along with links to pretty nifty free Twitter tools.
The only advice I’m not sure about in the post is to put a link in your direct response to people when they follow you. I think it might be taken as self-serving. But, I don’t know.
What do you think? And what do you think about Twitter in general?

I don’t think it’s self serving – I made that video as a way to personally (as personally as you can online) say hi and thanks for the follow! So far I’ve shot that out to my last 600 new followers and have had 1 negative complaint and 300+ positive “Thanks your video idea is amazing” (and many more along the same lines)
When you think about it – I’ve done something that probably 0.0001% of your other followers have done – and because of that simple extra step – you’ll more than likely always remember me. I’m always trying to think outside the box.. but sometimes the simplest little follow ups will make or break your efforts…
