Technology Plus Family Equals Magic
My niece got married last night in State College, PA, and I was there.
Well, not actually there, there. I was in Orange County, CA, but I was able to see and be part of the entire ceremony and reception.
I was planning to be at the wedding in person, but my mom, who lives with me, became ill. She’s 88 and I couldn’t get away for the long weekend.
But my niece wanted her Aunt and Nana to be part of the wedding, so she had her uncle (my brother) set up a live feed of the festivities. He was able to do it because he’s an engineer for one of the networks in Boston and knows how to do that kind of stuff.
It look a little testing, but in the end, the picture and audio were clear as a bell.
At 6pm, I poured us some wine, and my mom and I sat down at my laptop to watch the ceremony. We cried, just like everyone who was there.
And when the ceremony was over, our front door bell rang, and a man delivered a dozen roses and chocolate to us - sent by the new bride and groom.
My brother then set up the camera at the reception and we heard the wonderful toasts. We were especially touched at the toast given by the bride’s father (my other brother), who talked about how his mom was always right.
Through the reception, friends and family came over to the camera, and we got to speak to them through my brother’s cell phone.
It was just terrific. My mom was so happy that she got to see her granddaughter get married, and I was equally thrilled.
Sometimes I wonder if all this new technology is really helping humanity.
Now I know it is.
